How to: Welding Pole Pockets with the UNIPLAN

4/19/2017

  1. If you’re unfamiliar with the UNIPLAN be sure to read the operating manual. You can also check out our article on Welding Industrial Fabrics with the UNIPLAN E.
  2. Determine the welding parameters for your material by performing test welds on scrap material. For more information, see our article on Choosing Welding Parameters for Industrial Fabrics.
  3. Align the pole parallel to the leading edge of the vinyl and fold the leading edge over the pole to the desired pocket width. This will differ based on the pole diameter, overall length, and fitting preference.
  4. Use a small piece of mild adhesive tape to temporarily secure both ends of the folded material; be careful not to place the tape in the path of the welding seam. You may weld with or without the pole inside the pocket.
  5. Align the drive and guide wheels of the UNIPLAN on the leading edge of the folded material.
  6. Switch on the machine and set your welding parameters as determined in step 2.
  7. Swivel the hot air blower into place, sliding the welding nozzle between the two pieces of material. The UNIPLAN will start welding automatically.
  8. Guide the welding machine along the seam bypassing the end by 6 inches.
  9. To stop the welding machine, use the lever to pull out and raise the welding nozzle.
  10. Before shutting off power to the machine, set the air temperature to zero and allow the machine to run without heat for several minutes until the Temperature ACTUAL-value on the display is close to ambient temperature.
