Repairing Plastics in the Field

Repairing an object in the field adds several complexities to the welding process. Below are some tips to help you get a strong weld that will stand the test of time.

• Determine plastic type
  • It is important to determine the plastic type before gathering supplies
  • Look for a recycling symbol or do a flame test
  • Use welding rod made of the same type of plastic
  • If welding rod is unavailable or you cannot determine the plastic type, welding rod can be made from a duplicate object that is beyond repair
• Clean and dry the surface well
  • Remove all water, oil, dirt, or other contaminants 
• A crack may have to be notched so that there is a “V” to create surface area for the weld
  • Straight flat edges that butt together will not give a weld with good mechanical strength
• Immediately before welding scrape away the top layer of plastic to remove oxidization 
• Secure object to stable surface to minimize movement or put reinforcing tape on the back side to prevent two welding surfaces from moving relative to each other
• If possible, work in a sheltered area away from wind which could cool the weld too quickly
