Custom system meets new safety regulations and performs perfectly

5/10/2007

The Achievement
A cosmetics manufacturer in southern Ontario was able to meet safety regulations for a new production line, by using a heat delivery system specially engineered by STANMECH.
The Challenge
STANMECH was asked to deliver heat using our Leister tools to conform to safety regulations arising from the use of a new product formula containing chemicals emitting gases that could cause a fire or explosion. In order to comply with regulations, this new delivery system had to be situated at least 24 inches from the filling operation, eliminating any possibility of an accident. The question asked of us was whether our well proven Leister systems in daily use at the cosmetics company could be delivered under these restraints.

Never shrinking from a challenge, our response was that yes, it could be done.

The Details
Our solution was to provide a system utilizing our Leister “3300” 220w 3700v heaters working in combination with a Leister Robust blower and a specially fabricated 24-inch stainless steel nozzle attached to each heater that would allow the heaters to be mounted outside the restricted zone, yet capable of delivering the constant heat to the pans passing beneath and warming the cosmetic glass containers prior to filling.

All tools would be connected to PID controls so the heat could be controlled within one degree +/- C of the desired temperature and suspended over the line with seven feet of tubing attached to the blowers. Additional safeguards were built into the system to stop the air to the heaters if the air flow was interrupted by a power surge, spill or other emergency. The system would automatically protect the integrity of the heaters.

The engineering challenge was convincing ourselves that because of the distance the air had to travel to the heater and then beyond through the 24-inch extension the proper air flow through the 3300 tool could be established and maintained.
With some critical refinements to the PID system and tool we were able to deliver a completed, fully certified system.

The Results
The system is performing to the requirement and the project engineer has ordered two additional custom made nozzle extensions that we had suggested they required from the beginning but were not included in the initial system. We are quite proud of the system and the task it will perform in the new line operation. All requirements were met and delivered on time.
